Position: Social Research Officer.

Work location: Candidates may choose to work in Hanoi / Cuc Phuong National Park / Cat Tien National Park (frequent field trips required)

Reports to: Head of Conservation Research & Deputy Director of Conservation

Contract type: Full-time

  1. Background

Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW) is a Vietnamese non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, conservation, and research of endangered wildlife and their ecosystems. To strengthen evidence-based conservation practices, SVW is seeking to recruit a Social Research Officer to design and implement sociological, socio-economic, and human-centered research to inform conservation strategies, support law enforcement, enhance community engagement, and drive policy advocacy.

  1. Position objective

The Social Research Officer will design, implement, conduct, and support social science research to assess perceptions, behaviors, and socio-economic drivers related to wildlife trade, forest resource use, and conservation activities. This role provides scientific evidence to bridge natural and social sciences, thereby improving the effectiveness of conservation efforts.

  1. Key responsibilities

Research design & implementation

  • Develop and apply appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
  • Design questionnaires, survey tools, and interview guides.
  • Plan and coordinate field surveys, including logistics, training, and community engagement.
  • Conduct interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory research activities within the community.

Data Management & Analysis

  • Ensure data collection, storage, and management adhere to ethical and confidentiality standards.
  • Analyze data using analytical software (SPSS, STATA, R, NVivo).
  • Write reports, policy briefs, and scientific papers.

Communication & Sharing Results

  • Present research findings clearly to project teams, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Contribute research evidence to SVW’s strategy development, project design, and donor reporting.
  • Support advocacy efforts and community awareness-raising based on research data.

Organizational Contribution

  • Stay updated on new social research methodologies and apply them appropriately.
  • Collaborate closely with SVW’s biology, education, and enforcement teams.
  • Expand collaborative networks with universities, research institutes, and local agencies.
  1. Requirements & Experience

Mandatory:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Social Psychology, Development, or a related field.
  • Experience in designing and implementing qualitative and quantitative social research.
  • Proficiency in data analysis using statistical/qualitative software (SPSS, STATA, R, NVivo).
  • Strong writing and presentation skills in both Vietnamese and English.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Mastery of ethical principles in social research.

Priorities:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience working with conservation organizations or NGOs.
  • Publications in domestic or international scientific journals.
  • Understanding of the socio-cultural context of forest-dependent communities.
