Species information
Scientific name: Trachypithecus delacouri.
An endemic primate species of Vietnam and one of the most endangered primates in the world.
Easily identified by its black fur and the white patch on its rump and outer thighs—the feature that gives the species its name.
Body length is approximately 57–73 cm, with a tail length of 75–105 cm, and a weight of about 7–10 kg.
They live in groups on limestone mountain ranges, feeding primarily on leaves, buds, flowers, and fruits.
Geographic distribution
Naturally distributed only in Vietnam.
Currently, they mainly inhabit limestone mountain areas in Ninh Binh, Ha Nam, and Phu Tho provinces, with the largest population concentrated in the Van Long Nature Reserve.
Their habitat consists of limestone ecosystems interspersed with shrublands and evergreen forests.
Threat level
Listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List.
There are only about 500 individuals left in the wild, putting the species at a very high risk of extinction.
Vietnam is the only country in the world where this species is still known to exist.
