Rolly's Story
Rolly was a victim of illegal wildlife trafficking in Nam Dan District, Nghe An Province. Before being rescued by the district police and brought to the Pu Mat National Park Rescue Center on August 31, 2020, Rolly’s hind leg had become necrotic from a trap. Furthermore, during transport to the buyer, she was confined in a styrofoam box packed with ice, leaving her in critical condition and in need of intensive veterinary care.
As her injury worsened, Rolly required surgery to amputate the necrotic limb to save her life. She was subsequently transferred to the Cuc Phuong Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program. Following a successful surgery, while under anesthesia for a health check, veterinarians discovered that Rolly was pregnant. She was immediately moved to a special care unit. Nearly six months later, Rolly joyfully welcomed her baby, Chie.
Thanks to the dedicated care of our staff, Rolly and her baby were moved to a semi-wild enclosure by the end of 2021 for survival training and assessment. While Chie met the requirements for release into the wild, Rolly could not be released due to the loss of her leg. Moving, climbing to forage for food, and surviving in the wild would have been insurmountable challenges for her.
SUNNY's Story
Sunny was a victim of illegal wildlife trafficking in Nghi Loc District, Nghe An Province. After being rescued by forest rangers, she was transferred to the SVW rescue center on November 9, 2021.
Before arriving at the center, Sunny had suffered a broken hind leg that became necrotic after being caught in a trap, so veterinarians had to perform a full amputation to save her life. During the surgery, the vet discovered she was in the early stages of pregnancy, and she was subsequently moved to a special care area to recover and support her through her pregnancy.
Happily, on March 8, 2022, Sunny gave birth to a lovely baby pangolin weighing only 90 grams. We named her Ant, hoping that despite her small and fragile appearance, she would grow up to be resilient and strong.
Because Sunny lost her hind leg, she cannot adapt to life in the wild. Consequently, she will remain here as an educational ambassador for the center, while Ant will be raised by her mother to learn survival skills, and we will release her into the wild once she meets the necessary criteria.
