Species information
Scientific name: Rhinopithecus avunculus
One of the rarest primates in the world and endemic to Vietnam, meaning it is found naturally only in Vietnam.
Features a black coat mixed with white or gray, and a pale blue face with a characteristic upturned nose.
Body length is approximately 50–70 cm, with a tail length of 70–95 cm, and a weight of about 8–14 kg.
They live in groups in the forest canopy, feeding primarily on young leaves, fruits, seeds, and buds.
Estimated lifespan is about 20–30 years in the wild.
Geographic distribution
Distributed only in limestone mountain forests and evergreen forests in Northern Vietnam.
Currently recorded in several areas within Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, and Bac Kan provinces.
Populations are small in size and fragmented due to habitat loss.
Threat level
Critically Endangered (CR) according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
One of the 25 most endangered primate species in the world.
The total number of individuals in the wild is only a few hundred, placing the species at a very high risk of extinction.
