On May 13-14, 2023, SVW, in collaboration with Pu Mat National Park, successfully released 65 big-headed turtles (Platysternon megacephalum) back into the wild. These turtles were part of a group of 127 individuals rescued by SVW and Pu Mat National Park from illegal wildlife trade cases in Nghe An province in December 2022 and April 2023. After arriving at the rescue center, some individuals died due to injuries sustained during illegal transport.

This is the result of a collaborative effort between SVW and Pu Mat National Park to conserve these "ancient" creatures. Each release contributes to the conservation of endangered wildlife and reinforces SVW's commitment to protecting wildlife in Vietnam.

Currently, 55 other big-headed turtles are still being treated at the Pu Mat National Park Rescue Center. With professional care and guidance, it is hoped that the remaining individuals will soon be released, helping to increase population numbers and ensure biodiversity in the wild.

The big-headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) is the sole representative of the Platysternidae family; the disappearance of this species would mean the loss of an entire turtle family. Big-headed turtles are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to over-exploitation and illegal trade. Violations involving big-headed turtles carry severe prison sentences, as they are strictly protected under Decree 06/2019/ND-CP and listed as endangered, precious, and rare wildlife requiring protection under the Government's Decree 64/2019/ND-CP.
