On February 27, 2026, Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW) held a meeting with the Tuyen Quang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Du Gia - Dong Van Karst Plateau National Park to discuss and finalize plans for research and conservation activities focused on the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus) and biodiversity in Tuyen Quang province.

The Tonkin snub-nosed monkey is a primate species endemic to Vietnam, classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on both the IUCN Red List and the Vietnam Red Data Book, with an estimated population of approximately 144-160 individuals in the Khao Ca area and no current data available for other historical habitats.

Ms. Mai Thi Hoan, Deputy Director of the Tuyen Quang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, expressed her support and authorized SVW to conduct these activities within the province, with the 2026 focus on:

• Conducting a comprehensive survey to assess the current status of the population and its habitat;
• Strengthening capacity and supporting the implementation of SMART and the application of science and technology;
• Establishing a task force for the conservation of the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey;
• Developing a conservation plan for the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey with the participation and consensus of all involved parties;
• Researching habitat connectivity with the goal of establishing safe migration corridors for the species.

These Tonkin snub-nosed monkey conservation activities by Save Vietnam's Wildlife are funded by the Vietnam Wildlife Conservation Fund.
