From March 14-17, 2023, Save Vietnam's Wildlife (SVW) collaborated with Pu Mat National Park to survey scenic and thematic tourism routes around the Kem Waterfall area. The initiative aims to diversify tourism products to meet the varied needs of visitors and attract more tourists to Pu Mat National Park. By doing so, the Park can generate income from tourism activities to reinvest in conservation efforts, while also creating more stable livelihoods for local communities in the buffer zone, thereby helping to reduce negative pressure on natural resources.

Thematic tourism routes around the Kem Waterfall area and the Botanical Garden of Pu Mat National Park

Khe Ca Ne (also known as Ca Ne or Co Le) is located within the Kem Waterfall tourism complex in Pu Mat National Park, approximately 25 km from Con Cuong town, Nghe An province. This is an intriguing yet lesser-known scenic destination. The stream stretches along a small creek, nestled deep within the ancient forests of Pu Mat. Along the stream, countless large and small rocks of various shapes are scattered naturally, serving as stepping stones for travelers. The stream is particularly striking for its cool, crystal-clear water. Lush green canopies of ancient trees, vines, and shrubs intertwine in layers, sheltering the stream and its curious visitors. The journey through this natural masterpiece concludes at a mysterious "heaven's gate."

If you are a wildlife enthusiast, this place is truly a paradise for you. According to a veteran forest ranger, during the season when wild fruits ripen (the 4th and 8th lunar months), many animals gather around Kem Waterfall for a feast. You might spot flying squirrels, monkeys, birds, and more.

Within the administrative area of Pu Mat National Park, we have recorded the presence of dozens of different bird species. As for you, with a pair of binoculars and a little time spent strolling through the park, you will surely have the chance to admire the diverse shapes and colors of these birds, as well as enjoy the musical concert they perform together just for you.

The story of the lonely wild elephant in Pu Mat National Park

During this trip, the survey team also witnessed a visit from a wild elephant. According to the head of the Pu Mat ranger station, more than 20 years ago, there was a mother and her calf. However, the mother was killed by poachers, leaving the calf alone. Although there are other elephant herds scattered throughout Pu Mat National Park, totaling about 13-14 individuals, this elephant remains very lonely. Despite occasionally damaging trees and vegetation, the elephant has never attacked humans.

The habitat at Pu Mat is truly perfect for elephants. It features streams, sandy areas for the elephant to throw dirt on its body to ward off insects, grassy patches, and open clearings. It is a happy home, which is why the elephant keeps lingering there. Kem Waterfall remains beautiful and pristine. And on your way to visit the waterfall, you might just encounter this lonely wild elephant—if you are lucky enough!

SVW believes that the impressive survey results regarding natural resources, such as the landscape and the diversity of wildlife, provide a solid foundation for Pu Mat National Park to develop attractive scenic and thematic tourism routes, especially in the Kem Waterfall area. This will contribute to diversifying tourism products to attract visitors, thereby helping the park achieve its set goals soon.
